Southampton Airport
The airport site’s connection to aviation goes back to 1910,
when pioneer pilot Eric Moon used the meadows of a local farm as a
take-off and landing spot for his monoplane. Planes are a bit more
whizzy these days - and as a popular southern airport, Southampton
handled almost 2m passengers in 2008. In 2006, the anniversary of
the first Spitfire test flights was celebrated with the takeoff of
five restored originals.
