Liverpool John Lennon Airport
This airport features in one of pop history’s more iconic
moments – its original 1930s terminal building was famously seen on
television crammed with excited Beatles fans. The building was
replaced in 1986 and went derelict, but has since been turned into
a hotel, restored to Grade II Listed Art Deco glory. Next to the
estuary of the River Mersey, Liverpool John Lennon has been one of
Europe’s fastest growing airports, increasing annual footfall from
875,000 in 1998 to over 5m in 2007.

Manchester Airport
As well as being a major Northern airport with a huge offering
of international flights for world travellers, Manchester Airport
itself is a top tourist destination. That’s if you’re a certain
kind of tourist – 250,000 plane lovers a year are drawn to the
Aviation Viewing Park, where you can see aircraft taking off and
landing on both runways. Outside of London, Manchester handles the
largest number of passengers of any airport in the UK. Its second
runway opened in 2001 – the first full-length commercial runway to
open in Britain for over 20 years.
