Durham Tees Valley Airport
Durham Tees Valley Airport is in North East England, in the
vicinity of County Durham and North Yorkshire. It’s one of the UK’s
smaller airports, but enjoys a healthy mix of flight training,
flying clubs and business charters in addition to its commercial
services. The first flight from the airport was in 1964 – a Mercury
Airlines service to Manchester. Then, in 1966, the international
passenger terminal was opened by Princess Margaretha of Sweden.

Humberside Airport
With stiff competition from other regional airports, Humberside
has found a niche as a haven for general aviation – it has the
lowest landing fees of its kind. As a result, it has five resident
flying clubs. It’s also a major operating base for helicopters
flying to North Sea gas platforms. It’s not just utilitarian,
however – there are passenger services to the Netherlands, Cyprus
and Turkey.

Newcastle Airport
Although located in Newcastle, this airport is actually half
owned by Copenhagen Airport - plus seven local authorities.
Wanderlust voted it ‘The North’s favourite airport’, which is lofty
praise from a region with plenty of choice in aviation. Newcastle
opened in July 1935, offering a clubhouse, hangar, workshops, fuel
garage and grass runway. And it cost just £35,000 for all that in
those days. How things change.
