Jersey Airport
Air service to Jersey before 1937 consisted of biplane airliners
and some seaplanes landing on the beach at Saint Aubin’s Bay. Less
than ideal – especially since schedules were governed by tides,
plus it was hard to stop members of the public strolling across the
‘runway’. A state-built airport with grass runways was the answer,
further fitted with concrete runways when occupied by the Luftwaffe
in WWII. The airport now serves several European cities and flew
just over a million and a half passengers in 2008.
